Earlier this week you saw a post about local engagement session locations that I like in the DC area. So you know where you want to take engagement photos but now you’re stuck with having no clue what to wear. It’s like high school picture day all over again and you’ve taken everything out of your closet and tried everything on 100 times… oh. was that just me?! Breathe with me people… it’s gonna be A-OK. I’m here to share with you some couples that really nailed their outfits. Nothing is worse than super matchy matchy or clashing – I’m here to show you where couples played their cards right and complimented each other nicely. Remember back in the day when it was all the rage to wear khakis and a white t-shirt… please, I beg you… don’t do it. You don’t want to be identical. You want to compliment. There’s a big difference. Other advice – show your personality and be comfortable. I want you to shine on this shoot! That isn’t mean to sound corny. What do you look best in? What are you comfortable in? Do you like dressing up? Do you like to add layers? What makes you feel AWESOME!? That’s what I want you to wear!
Neutrals are a great starting point! Dark wash jeans, tan, brown, creme – all mix so well together. I also loved Julia’s green jacket! (I have one similar that I wear ALL THE TIME… if you’ve met me – you’ve probably seen it!)
I’m all for having more than one outfit during your session. I really don’t mind! Some couples like to start dressy and then switch into something more casual. It’s completely up to you! Haley and Robbie had 3 outfits – all in the same color scheme but all different and complimentary to each other.
As long as you BOTH aren’t bold. I loved Morgan’s bright orange dress! Steve still dressed to impress but he wasn’t clashing against her.
Keep your location in mind. What’s the vibe? I loved Dex and Rachel’s light colors for their beachy engagement session. Rachel picked a flowy dress that photographed really well in the ocean air! I loved the pinky-coral shirt that Dex wore because it picked up the soft pinks in the sky. They “matched” the location really well!
Rainey and Andrew’s coffee date was cute and cozy! Casual and relaxed.
Don’t be scared of patterns! But remember what I said about being bold. If one of you wears a pattern be conscious of what your partner is wearing. Patterns can sometimes also distract from the scenery. That’s rare – but think about WHERE you’re going to determine what would “match” that scene or get lost in it.
Kyle and Lora’s look works because he’s wearing plaid but she’s wearing red – one of the colors found in the plaid. It works!
Rachel rocked the floral print in her NYC engagement session!
Delaney’s dress was a subtle pattern that didn’t distract from the scenery or from TJ. These two looked adorable for their Fall session in DC.
Remember you can layer and add jewelry to switch up a look!
If in doubt… guys always look nice in a button down shirt! Dress it up with a tie or keep it casual.
